Can Glenmark Pharma Taste Success Where Its Peers Have Not?

One of the earliest Indian drugmakers to have focused on innovative R&D, Glenmark Pharma is now spinning off its R&D business into a separate company that would be based in the US. Glenmark Pharma has hired a former executive from Gilead & Novartis to head the new company. All innovative molecules in the pipeline, including preclinical assets and technology, the R&D centres in Switzerland, Paramus, and Navi Mumbai, and the biologics manufacturing facility in Switzerland, along with 400 employees associated with innovative drug discovery will be part of the new company in the next six to nine months. Glenmark's current innovation pipeline consists of eight assets, including new chemical entities and new biologic entities in various stages of development. Pharma MNCs Raise Alarm Over Illegal Drug Imports

Multinational pharmaceutical companies are crying foul over the illegal import of innovator drugs worth crores of rupees into the Indian market from neighbouring countries and sale by pharmacies, distributors and websites. The Organisation of Pharmaceutical Producers of India, which represents Abbott, Pfizer, Novartis, Novo Nordisk, GSK, Bayer, Merck and Sanofi, among others, claims the rampant and unchecked import of innovator drugs was adversely affecting the revenue of India as well as the companies. “ We have noticed that the innovator drugs, mostly oncology (cancer) drugs, were being illegally imported into India through neighbouring countries like Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan and Sri Lanka ,” Kanchana TK, director general of OPPI, told  ET  in Hyderabad recently. Pharmacy graduates not allowed to join Maharashtra Forest Service despite state minister's direction

Scores of pharmacists aspiring to join Maharashtra Forest Service have been left in lurch due to lackadaisical attitude of state forest department in ensuring that B Pharm becomes one of the eligibility criteria for state forest service examination conducted by Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC). The state forest department has hardly paid heed to the matter despite direction from forest minister Sudhir Mungantiwar to take steps to incorporate B Pharm in education qualification of candidates appearing for Maharashtra forest service examination.  Mungantiwar issued direction last year following a representation by Maharashtra Registered Pharmacists Association (MRPA) in this regard.  MRPA president Kailash Tandale in the memorandum appealed to the state forest minister to make pharmacy graduates eligible for state forest service examination.  The minister assured Tandale that B Pharm qualification would be incorporated in the eligibility criteria for candidates
