Artificial Intelligence can revolutionize management of TB and its eradication in India: Ajoy Khandheria

Artificial Intelligence can propel TB eradication in India. The use of technology has the potential to revolutionize the medical care where large population is suffering from one or the other disease including tuberculosis, said Ajoy Khandheria, Founder, Gramin Healthcare.

Globally, tuberculosis reported nearly two million fatality cases even crossing HIV/ AIDS. Currently, India reports the highest incidences of tuberculosis cases in the world, accounting for nearly 27 per cent of the world’s 10 million TB cases. Apart from sanitation and overall improved nutrition, one of the major hurdles to diagnose TB is the lack of trained clinicians. The use of Artificial Intelligence has given hope in tackling this deadly menace, he added.

With increased economic growth and affordability, adoption of the technology is on rise especially in medicine and diagnosis. AI is creating actionable impact in diagnosis and curing deadly ailments. It enhances the functioning of doctors as they sift and interpret through reams of data, diagnose current ailment all the while creating a patient profile. Owing to the sheer volume of medical data generated on a regular basis, the fact that AI can cut down, analyze, and aggregate patient data is very promising, said Khandheria.

Taking regular medicines is one of the key requirements to fight the menace of TB. Here, the AI can be used for patient care communication by providing short message service (SMS) informing them about timely visit to doctors and ways of taking medicines, he said.

The use of technology in keeping medical record of the patient could prove very useful in providing quality care to the victim of the disease. China has greatly used the technology in keeping a TB information management system for monitoring TB patients. This has helped them in keeping track of medications and patients who have become drug resistance to TB, stated Khandheria.

Gramin Healthcare has rolled out cost-effective care via its centres in Bihar, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Haryana. Its 100 manned operational brick-and-mortar clinics conducted over 4,800 health camps in Tier 4 and below regions.

To tackle tuberculosis, AI offers the ability to mechanize a task, increasing the level of efficacy and considerably reducing the rate of error. Early detection and diagnosis not only controls the aggravation, but also reduces the cost of treatment in a big way. AI-enabled treatment is possible due to a deep-learning technology, which are basically programs mimicking the very structure of the brain. Deep learning can distinguish patterns, adding apt detection and diagnosis in a more effective manner.

Tech-enabled medical care can help doctors to gain significant understanding of patient’s illness from the collected data. This eventually, saves a lot of time, effort and costs through easy access to consistent, good-quality diagnosis and treatment. The automated detection of disease will help millions of people to access high quality and affordable health screening. This way AI could revolutionize the management of TB.
