University of Hyderabad (UoH) has signed an MoU with Natco Pharma for carrying out advance research in the areas of discovery of novel drugs and their delivery systems among others. According to a release issued by the university today, the research includes nano formulations of new chemical entities and novel biotechnological processes for specific products with potential commercial importance. Both the parties will promote cooperation in academic exchange, research and development collaborations, training and research in the areas of biotechnology, pharmacology, toxicology, pharmaceutical technology and organisation of national and international conferences, exhibition and similar events in areas of mutual interest, it said. Following its tie-up with Johnson & Johnson and Sahajanand Laser Technologies for development of industry-oriented skilled manpower in the medical device sector, the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER), Ahmedabad is planning to collaborate with two US-based companies to equip the students to aggressively take up job roles for the holistic development of domestic industry. This would also help orient the curriculum of the post graduate studies in medical devices run exclusively at the NIPER Ahmedabad campus towards equipping with the latest updates on technology advancements in the country. This is a significant milestone as India's import dependency on high-end medical devices is over 80 per cent and 60 per cent to 70 per cent for other devices.   A dedicated medical devices park by the government is also currently in the process of being set-up at Vishakhapatnam which will help in reducing import dependency and increasing export. ...

Malaria eradication project will be first launched at Mandla district of Madhya Pradesh, covering 1,200 villages over three to five years. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and pharmaceutical major Sun Pharma on Monday entered into a public-private partnership (PPP) to eradicate malaria. The partners will jointly set up management and technical committees to provide oversight for malaria surveillance and elimination. In its first phase, the project will be launched at Mandla district of Madhya Pradesh, covering 1,200 villages over three to five years. As part of this corporate social responsibility initiative, Sun Pharma will launch an independent not-for-profit foundation. “The idea of this partnership is to use our understanding and knowledge for the success of this project. Pfizer and IIT-Delhi on Tuesday said they have launched an incubation accelerator initiative at the later's campus for Indian startup companies as well as individuals. Christened "The Pfizer IIT-Delhi Innovation and IP Program ", it comprises two components. For innovators seeking comprehensive support to translate their healthcare ideas into patents, the programme will provide two years of residential incubation at IIT-Delhi, funding of up to Rs.50 lakh for each innovator, mentoring support from IIT-Delhi's faculty, access to infrastructure and prototyping laboratories, IP search and filing services, guidance from Pfizer's global experts, and access to venture capitalists and other industry linkages. For innovators who already have a ready proof of concept and are seeking to obtain a patent, the programme will provide access to IP attorneys and services and cover the patent fee. To boost innovation, seven National Institutes for Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPERs) have signed linkage agreements with 17 public and private companies. The memoranda of understanding (MoU) were exchanged in the presence of President Pranab Mukherjee on November 4, according to an official statement. “The Department of Pharmaceuticals has identified academia-industry linkage as a basic requirement for translating research into development (commercialisation) and iinnovation, and also to fix accountability among the educational institutions,” the statement said, adding that this initiative will be a “historic event in the annals of Department of Pharmaceuticals in its endeavour of making India a global leader in drugs discovery.” The MoUs related to research collaboration and exchange of scientific personnel were signed by Hyderabad NIPER with Dr Reddy’s Lab, Bharat Biotech and NATCO , and Ahmedabad NIPER with Cadila Pharma and Cadila Healthcare . Graduate students across the country, with an interest in health care and medical research, will soon have the opportunity to learn about a lesser-known area of patient care - the drug discovery and development process. Eli Lilly and Company has collaborated with 10 leaders from academic institutions to create an elective graduate level course, " Making Medicines: The Process of Drug Development. " Lilly will formally unveil the eLearning course at the American Osteopathic Association scientific conference in Orlando, Florida, October 17-21, and launch its pilot programme with academic partners beginning in 2016. Purdue University is working toward a strategic partnership with a pharmaceutical company in India. The school and Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Ltd. have signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at boosting research and development. The collaboration will focus on pharmaceutical process and product development research in fields such as targeted drug delivery, manufacturing technology, scale-up of pharmaceutical operations, process engineering, as well as research and development methodologies and technology. India has been a strategic focus for the university, which has nearly 1,500 students from the Asian nation. President Mitch Daniels is scheduled to visit India this fall.  The agreement is also designed to push forward the Purdue Moves drug discovery initiative, which involves translating "basic research into life-changing treatments."
