The economic times reports that,  you may be able to buy nearly 500 low-cost drugs supplied by the government at your neighbourhood pharmacy from July under Jan Aushadhi brand if a plan proposed by an expert panel is implemented.   The drugs are likely to cost 50-95 per cent less than their private branded counterparts, members of the expert committee told ET, adding that the medicines selected under the scheme span six therapeutic categories including cardiovascular, diabetes, respiratory and antibiotics. (‘Coldstream’), through its wholly owned subsidiary in the USA in an all cash transaction.   Coldstream is a Contract Development and Manufacturing Organisation (CDMO) focused on the development and manufacturing of sterile injectable products. The high cost of research and drug discovery has not deterred start-ups from entering the arena of drug discovery. As the economics times reports, start-ups like Bugworks, Vitas Pharma have entered the field of drug discovery.   Across geographies, big pharmaceutical companies seem to have stepped back from research and development (R&D) for new drug discovery in this field. That is simply because it's more profitable to find new drugs that focus on lifestyle and other diseases where efficacy isn't diminished by use. But a couple of startups in India have recently entered the field of drug discovery. The news of Indian Institute of Packaging (IIP), an autonomous body under the Ministry of Commerce, taking up the matter of printing expiry dates behind each tablets, may have caused a flutter among the pharmaceutical companies because of the cost factor, there are positive reactions from the general public and print firms reports PrintWeek India.   “Printing of expiry dates of each pill will be impossible to carry out and we are not just talking about the cost factor and reading being difficult to decipher, printing it in red, along the length of the strip, preferable on either side, will be a good idea,” said one response.   At present, the expiry date is printed in one corner of the strip along with the batch number and date of manufacturing. Despite significant price control on essential drugs across almost all therapy groups, sales by Indian manufacturers in December 2014 grew 14.4%  reports Mint.   India’s drug market grew 11% to touch Rs. 87,235.19 crore in the 13 months ended 31 December 2014 powered by local drug makers, data showed.   The IMS released data for December 2014 as well as for the 13 months from 1 December 2013 to 31 December 2014.   The top 10 drug makers accounted for 40% of sales in the 13-month period. Among the top 10 companies, Cipla Ltd grew 24%. Indian Patent Office has rejected a patent application for Sofosbuvir which was discovered by Pharmasset and developed by Gilead Sciences. Sofosbuvir is used against Hepatitis C. The patent application which was filed by Gilead covered the drug product which has been granted in several territories including US. The price of patented medicines has always been a concern for the Indian healthcare industry. With this decision, we can be rest assured that patients with Hepatitis C would have access to affordable treatment options. It is however worth noting that Indian companies like Cipla, Zydus, Hetero, Ranbaxy and others had entered into license agreements with Gilead to sell their product in India. Gilead had also planned to launch its own drug Sovaldi at the cost of 300USD per bottle.
