A study on "Unmasking expired medicines journey through judgmental qualitative analysis"

A Team of students from Dr. L. H. Hiranandani College of Pharmacy, Ulhasnagar has carried out a project related to "Unmasking expired medicines journey through judgmental qualitative analysis", an important but neglected topic in India. The project is carried out under the able guidance of Dr. Itishree Vaidya, who is Ph.D. (Tech) in Pharmaceutical Chemistry and carries with her more than 16 years of experience.



Rationale:
Around 20 % of the Drugs which is manufactured in the industry is not used, it gets disposed as it is and not used in any way.

MATERIALS AND METHODS:
´  Place of study: Dr L.H Hiranandani college of pharmacy, Ulhasnagar, Mother Teresa Jr college, Airoli , Krishna processors, Kalyan.
´   Study duration: From December 2017 to July 2018, Age grp -19-50 yrs (Majority of 19-23yrs).
´  Design of questionnaire: The questionnaire consisted of the demographic data, questions on the type of quantity of purchased medicine that remain UNUSED at your home.
´  No of Responses: 504
´  Medium of Collection of responses: Google forms.
´  Data analysis: Excel or spread sheet, Graphical analysis (Excel 2013), Descriptive statistics.







Response rate:
A total of 590 questionnaires were distributed. Out of them, 504 were returned giving a response rate of 85.42%.

 Discussion:
´  72.2%   of population agreed that some quantity purchased medicines remained unused at their homes.
´  60.6% of the population discarded the expired medicines in the form they are.
´  88.5% of the population agreed that improper disposal of medicines can affect environmental and health.
´  88.5% of the population claimed that the PHARMACY COUNCIL OF INDIA is responsible to create awareness for proper disposal of medicines and 56% suggested electronic media to be the best source of awareness.
´  73% of the population agreed that they kept the unused medicines at home and 75.1% threw it in the dustbin.
