‘Precision medicine’ is emerging as big treatment approach for cancer: Genetic scientists

Eminent genetic scientists from various countries, who assembled at the Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research (SRIHER) in Chennai last week observed that the emerging specialty in medical science, Precision Medicine which renders a new approach to medical treatment, has very big scope in treating and curing cancer diseases.

They felt that precision medicine and individual therapy, especially for cancer patients, is becoming increasingly possible and the challenge is collection and handling of genomic data. In the near future, precision medicine approach will expand in many other areas of healthcare management.

The genetic scientists of India and abroad held deliberations on the theme, “Advancing Healthcare through Genomics” at the three day annual meeting of the Indian Society of Human Genetics held at the Institute.

‘This approach will allow doctors and researchers to predict more accurately which treatment and prevention strategies for a particular disease will work in various people. Precision medicine approach for disease treatment and prevention takes into account individual variability in genes, environment, and lifestyle for each person. Healthcare around the world is moving towards proactive determinants rather than reactive ones, and genomics has a big role in early diagnosis of cancer’, said Dr. Solomon Paul, principal, faculty of BioMedical Sciences and Technology and HOD Human genetics at SRIHER.

Dr. J. Radhakrishnan, former health secretary of Tamil Nadu and currently the principal secretary and commissioner, revenue administration, said there is tremendous scope for genetic labs in the country as precision medicine based on genetic dispositions of individuals is coming into focus in medical treatment. Though marriage among close relatives is still prevalent in the south we tend to ignore genetic implications for many diseases. The challenge for doctors therefore is to concentrate on the research side along with the clinical side in bringing the best outcome for a patient.

Pharmacogenomics is part of precision medicine and it explains how genes affect a person’s response to particular drugs. This area is also a new field which combines pharmacology (the science of drugs) and genomics (the study of genes and their functions) to develop effective, safe medications and doses that are tailored to variations in a person’s genes.

Dr. P.V. Vijayaraghavan, vice chancellor, SRIHER, Dr. Moinak Banerjee, president, Indian Society of Human Genetics and Dr. P. Venkatachalam, associate dean, SRIHER spoke on the subject in various sessions. In the three days programme, over 200 genetic scientists were present from various countries.
